CHAPTER 12

A car drove by and lit us up. We pulled apart—me with a nervous laugh. Alex opened the passenger door for me. I settled in. A few seconds later, Alex was beside me. We didn’t speak as he started the car, but the atmosphere between us was charged with electricity.

We’d taken a big step forward.

I was sorry that the passing car had interrupted our kiss, and yet not sorry to take a breath and think about where we might be headed as a couple. The memory of Alex’s lips made my own lips tingle. But our future wasn’t without its problems.

I looked at Alex, but he was focused on the road ahead. Even after three or four wonderful hours together, I still couldn’t guess what he was thinking. I wasn’t even certain what I was thinking. There was this budding romance to savor, but I couldn’t help worrying about Gillian and her messy love triangle. What had happened after the two men left the restaurant? Had they beaten each other to a pulp? Had one or both of them gone to Lemmington House to confront Gillian? With luck, someone—probably the restaurant manager—had called the police to report the brewing fight.

Or was I being overdramatic? Perhaps the men had simply gone home.

I gazed out the car window. The streets were empty, and the moonlight lit up rows of characterful stone houses, a few with warm yellow lights sneaking through the gaps in their curtained windows. I tried to imagine what those households were doing with their Friday night. A cozy film with popcorn on the couch? A dinner party for friends? A Scrabble championship? Whatever they were up to, it had to be more normal than my own life.

Sometimes I wished things were a little less complicated. Then again, I’d probably be bored without a chatty parrot and nosy witches in my farmhouse and a werewolf taking me to dinner.

As we left Kingham and headed toward Willow Waters, I wondered whether I should call Owen to warn him to keep an eye on Gillian and her two angry men, but I wasn’t sure I should interfere. Gillian was capable of calling Owen or the police if she needed protecting. Still, I felt uneasy. She and I weren’t close enough that I could call or message her to make sure all was well, but tomorrow I’d find an excuse to speak with her.

The road we were on would pass by Barnham House. The closer we got to Dennis Ratslaff’s new home, the more my instincts began to twitch. In spite of a full belly and the happy feeling that romance was in the air, I felt as though Alex and I were driving into shadows.

Something in me was springing to attention as I sensed danger. It was potent. A dark, heavy feeling pooled in my belly—like a lake of black ink.

What had my mom said earlier? The spirits are unsettled. I had the strange feeling that Dennis’s destruction had awakened something terrible.
